RTP (Research Triangle Park) is the largest and leading science and research park on the continent. It was founded in 1959, and it was named for the Triangle region where the 7,000-acre campus is situated. At eight miles long and two miles wide, Research Triangle Park sits in Durham, but the lower extensions extend into Wake County. Parts of the Park are also located in Morrisville and Cary. The Park was originally named for the affiliation between the three major colleges and universities in the area: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
